Connecticut ranks 27th in U.S. for pedestrian safety

Connecticut ranks among the lower half of the states in pedestrian safety according to a report issued by the National Complete Streets Coalition. The state was also designated the 27th worst state for pedestrian safety according to the report, Dangerous by Design 2014. The report found that 351 residents were killed in pedestrian accidents on Connecticut's roads from 2003 to 2012.

Dental procedure leads to fatal accident

Health care practitioners, besides physicians, can endanger their patients' lives. According to allegations from the Connecticut Department of Health, a dental procedure performed under anesthesia caused the death of a patient in February 2014. The dentist's license was placed under suspension in late April and he was ordered to stay away from patients because of this fatality and an alleged injury to another patient that resulted in a six-day hospital stay.

Truck causes second chain reaction car accident

Speed and size can be a dangerous combination for motorists in Connecticut. A passenger vehicle may have little protection against a semi-trailer, particularly a truck that is not driving at the speed appropriate for conditions. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration reported 14 fatalities involving large trucks in 2012 in Connecticut while speeding accounted for 39 deaths that year.

Police found liable for $10 million in wrongful death

Government officials may be held liable if someone dies as a result of the official not meeting their duties. For example, a Hartford jury found that two Plainville police officers were negligent in the handling of a woman's complaints against her boyfriend who stabbed her in 2009. On April 27, following two days of deliberations, the jury awarded $10 million to her estate which is administered by her father.
