Connecticut wrongful death suit may result from cyclist's death

It is becoming more common for bicyclists to share the road with motor vehicles. Therefore, it's very important for drivers to be watchful in order to keep tragic accidents from occurring. It has been over a month since one Connecticut family suffered the loss of their loved one who died as he was riding his bicycle. Following the arrest of the driver who was involved in the fatal accident, the family of the decedent may be considering a wrongful death claim.

According to the police, the driver was making a turn at the same time the bicyclist was approaching the intersection from the opposite direction. The bicycle hit the passenger side of the vehicle, throwing the rider to the ground. Another car then turned and struck him, and he was pinned underneath the vehicle.

The 21-year-old driver who caused the accident was just recently arrested and charged in the Oct. 20 collision. He now faces criminal charges of tampering with evidence, evading responsibility for a fatal accident and making an improper left turn. His bond was set at $150,000.

As this young man looks at the possibility of jail time and other criminal penalties, he may also face the victim's family in Connecticut civil court. His arrest could help them with a wrongful death claim because it may be used as evidence that the fatal accident resulted from his negligence. Certain family members may be able to pursue compensation for funeral expenses, lost wages and other damages. While no lawsuit could lessen the pain of their tragic loss, it could give them some much-needed financial relief during an extremely emotional time.
