Just to the east of Hartford, police arrested a 21-year-old Preston man earlier this week. The young man appears to have been out drinking and driving the night of his 21st birthday. Not only had he been drinking, but police report that his blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit of 0.08. Despite leading police on a chase before he was finally arrested, he was fortunate that he avoided causing an accident and serious injuries.
There is no excuse for drunk driving and for those people who try to argue that having some alcohol in one’s system is not that dangerous, they are wrong. Alcohol, even less alcohol than what will classify as legal intoxication, can hamper a person’s ability to drive safely. From slower reflexes to impaired judgment, driving under the influence of alcohol is incredibly dangerous.
Take this young man’s recent arrest. Not only was he highly intoxicated, but when officers found him, he had been driving a pickup truck the wrong way down Route 6 in Windham. Eventually, officers found him driving in circles in a parking lot, but when they tried to pull him over, he started driving down Route 6 and then Route 66. Not only was he speeding, but he continued to go into and out of oncoming traffic in an attempt to outrun police.
Eventually, police caught him and arrested him.
Though the night turned out alright for everyone except for the birthday boy, he put a lot of people’s lives at risk, including his own. He easily could have caused a very serious drunk driving accident.
