Van runs over3 Newington pedestrians

Vehicle-versus-pedestrian accidents are an all too common danger in this country and in Connecticut. Drivers sometimes fail to pay enough attention to others on the road, and people can get hurt. A chilling example occurred during a pedestrian accident in Newington on June 3.

A teal pickup hit three pedestrians as they were crossing Christian Lane around 1:15 p.m. A witness reported that the van came out of nowhere and just crashed into the pedestrians without braking. The truck dragged the pedestrians the victims approximately 50 feet as the driver continued to drive, according to the witness.

This witness drove his white van across the road to stop the vehicle when he saw that the driver was continuing to drive away. The truck crashed into the van, went into reverse and tried to drive away. The van driver stopped the truck driver and took him to the crash scene.

The three pedestrians, all from New Britain, suffered non-life threating injuries including broken bones and cuts. Two victims, 23 and 43-years-old, are recovering from their injuries and remain hospitalized. An 18-year-old victim was released from the hospital.

The pickup truck driver is a 32-year-old from East Hampton. Police have not filed charges and are seeking information from the public as part of its investigation. There are no signs that the driver was intoxicated or that he suffered from a medical condition.

Regardless of whether criminal charges are filed in these types of accidents, victims may be entitled to compensation for their losses. Accident victims should seek advice on whether a lawsuit is feasible.
