Pedestrians face multiple risks

On Behalf of | Oct 10, 2014 | Pedestrian Accidents |

Stepping onto a crosswalk, walking through a parking lot and even using a jogging path may pose serious and often fatal risks to Connecticut pedestrians from cars, trucks and bicycles. Defective traffic devices and improperly designed facilities such as sidewalks and roads may also cause injury or death.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration found that a pedestrian was killed every two hours and injured every seven minutes in the United States in traffic crashes in 2012. Connecticut suffered 36 pedestrian fatalities in traffic crashes that year, according to the NHTSA.

Victims of a pedestrian accident caused by a negligent or reckless driver may be entitled to compensation for medical treatment, lost wages and other losses resulting from those crashes. However, prosecution of these claims may be complicated by determining whether the driver, facility owner or state or local government is responsible for the crash and the extent of their liability. Drivers may have inadequate or no insurance coverage which compound the difficulty with obtaining just compensation.

Our law firm understands that expertise is often required to determine whether a driver or others did not exercise due care or even acted illegally. Witness statements, police reports, blood alcohol content results and other crash evidence must be secured promptly. Time periods restrict the time a personal injury, premises liability or wrongful death action may be filed in Connecticut.

We have over 20 years of experience with representing pedestrians and their families in settlement negotiations, insurance company dealings and in court proceedings. Our firm can help secure just compensation where a pedestrian is injured under various circumstances such as a vehicle that was speeding or ran a traffic light, driven by an impaired or aggressive driver or where a pedestrian was struck by a hit and run motorist.
