Being involved in a car accident is traumatizing even after the victims are discharged from the hospital, as they have to come to terms with their physical, emotional and financial losses. Oftentimes, the physical injuries heal, but leave behind overwhelming medical bills and emotional scars that take longer to heal.

Accident victims also want to come to terms with their experience, and understand why the other driver who caused the crash behaved the way he or she did. When the crash is caused by a drunk driver, this can be even more upsetting, because a drunk driving accident is one that is completely avoidable had the driver not gotten behind the wheel while intoxicated.

According to reports, a 61-year-old woman was arrested in Connecticut recently for drunkenly driving her vehicle into two children on bicycles. According to police officers, she was driving north when she took her vehicle off the right side of the road. She went into a highway sign and hit two boys on bikes. The 12-year-old and 13-year-old boys suffered broken bones and cuts as a result. Additionally, the alleged drunk driver ran from the scene of the accident. Police apprehended her, however, and charged her with a number of motor vehicle violations, including second-degree assault with a motor vehicle and reckless driving.

A crash between pedestrians or cyclists and a motor vehicle can be even more devastating, as victims often have little to no protection from injuries. This is often why accident victims may decide to pursue civil claims against negligent drivers, in addition the criminal charges pending against them.
