It’s devastating to think that someone would drive drunk without thinking about the consequences to others. Someone who decides to drive home from work or school while impaired isn’t just putting themselves at risk. They’re also threatening the lives of those around them.

This story is a sad example of how a single mistake can lead to a serious outcome. In New Shoreham, a teen was killed in a crash involving a drunk driver. The news report states that the 16-year-old teen was a junior at Fairfield Ludlowe High School. Another teen, also male, was severely injured in the collision as well.

The report states that a female driver was charged for driving under the influence. She now faces a count for driving to endanger leading to a serious injury, driving under the influence causing death and driving under the influence leading to serious bodily harm. She faces one count for driving to endanger resulting in death as well.

The reality of DUI crashes is that they don’t have to happen. Drivers have other options, like taking taxis or using ride-sharing services. People who need a ride home but are relying on an intoxicated driver have options, too. Teens should always know that they can call their parents, teachers or other sober friends to get a ride home instead of riding with someone who is intoxicated.

If you lose a loved one in a DUI crash like this or suffer an injury in one yourself, it’s important that the driver is held responsible. You have the right to seek compensation for what you’ve been through.
